Technical Achievement & Multi-Camera Cinematography Experiment


VALKYRIE Female fight club is being designed as more than a psychological action thriller. It is also an ambitious cinematography and imaging experiment exploring how different cameras, sensors, film gauges, frame rates, lenses, recording technologies, and post-production workflows change the emotional character of a moving image.


Our goal is not to make every camera look identical.


Our goal is to demonstrate why different cameras look different — and then use those differences as part of the storytelling.


Ultimately, we intend to document the process and pursue appropriate recognition for the project’s technical innovation, including consideration of whether the completed work and workflow could support a future submission or pathway toward an Academy Scientific and Technical Award / technical-achievement recognition, subject to the Academy’s eligibility and evaluation requirements.



PHANTOM FLEX 4K — EXTREME HIGH-SPEED CINEMATOGRAPHY


One of the centerpiece technologies will be our Phantom Flex 4K, which we already own.


The Phantom will photograph the underground fight sequences at extreme frame rates, transforming fractions of a second into extended cinematic events.


Instead of simply showing a punch, the audience will experience the physics and emotion inside the punch:


* muscles contracting before impact;

* facial tissue responding to impact;

* hair moving independently through space;

* sweat separating from skin;

* dust lifting from the floor;

* clothing stretching and twisting;

* changes in expression that normally occur too quickly for the human eye to perceive;

* the instant when fear becomes aggression;

* the transition from anticipation to impact and recovery.


A fraction of a second can become several seconds of screen time.


We can then violently transition from extreme super slow motion back into 24 fps real time.


The change itself becomes storytelling.


SUPER SLOW MOTION.


Silence.


A heartbeat.


Impact.


SNAP BACK TO REALITY.


The Phantom is therefore not simply being used to create spectacular images. It represents the altered perception of time experienced by our characters during moments of extreme adrenaline.



ARRI ALEXA — THE DIGITAL CINEMA REFERENCE


ARRI Alexa-family cinematography can provide one of our primary contemporary digital reference points.


Its controlled cinematic image can represent the characters’ apparent everyday reality.


When their psychological world begins breaking apart, we can move away from this established visual language and into completely different imaging technologies.



RED DIGITAL CINEMA CAMERAS


RED cameras will add another important digital cinema family to the experiment.


RED’s high-resolution digital acquisition gives us an opportunity to compare a different sensor and image-processing philosophy against ARRI, Sony, Canon, Fujifilm and motion-picture film.


Rather than grading all these cameras until they become indistinguishable, selected controlled sequences can preserve enough of their individual characteristics to make meaningful comparisons possible.



SONY CINEMA CAMERAS


The project will also incorporate Sony professional digital cinema cameras.


Sony provides another major contemporary imaging platform that can be evaluated alongside ARRI, RED, Canon and Fuji systems.


We are particularly interested in comparing how these different systems interpret the same fundamental photographic elements:


Faces. Skin. Highlights. Shadows. Color. Motion. Contrast. Low light. Practical lighting. Extreme lighting conditions.


The dramatic feature gives us an opportunity to perform these comparisons in real cinematic environments rather than only photographing conventional camera charts.



CANON CINEMA CAMERAS


Canon professional cinema cameras will form another part of the comparison.


Canon imagery can be used both creatively within the narrative and as part of controlled technical comparisons.


The intention is not to declare a universal winner between ARRI, RED, Sony, Canon or Fuji.


The more interesting question is:


What does each camera contribute emotionally to the scene?


A camera that is perfect for one character or environment may be completely wrong for another.


That difference is exactly what we want to explore.



FUJIFILM / FUJI DIGITAL IMAGING


Fuji-based digital cinematography introduces yet another interpretation of color, texture and skin.


Where appropriate, Fuji imagery can occupy its own place within the visual architecture of the film instead of simply being forced to emulate our primary digital camera.


The audience may never consciously know that the camera has changed.


But they should feel that something has changed.



35MM MOTION-PICTURE FILM


Selected sequences will be photographed on 35mm motion-picture film.


This gives us a genuine photochemical reference against which our digital cameras and film-emulation workflows can be evaluated.


Instead of asking whether a digital LUT “looks like film,” we can place genuine film photography into the project and examine the differences.


35mm can become associated with particular memories, characters or heightened emotional states.



16MM FILM


16mm film gives us a radically different texture.


Its grain, resolution and physical characteristics can become particularly effective for traumatic memories, military flashbacks, underground environments and documentary-style sequences.


The format is not being treated as technically inferior.


Its imperfections are precisely what make it valuable.



8MM / SUPER 8


8mm and Super 8-style photography can represent distant memory, childhood, dreams and unreliable recollections.


The transition from pristine modern digital cinematography into a small-gauge photochemical image immediately changes the audience’s relationship with the material.


In Scarlet Circle, image imperfection becomes an emotional language.



PROFESSIONAL AND CONSUMER CAMERAS


We also intend to incorporate selected professional, prosumer and consumer imaging systems.


Depending upon the story, this could include compact cameras, action cameras, surveillance-style imagery, phones and other unconventional acquisition systems.


A camera does not have to cost $100,000 to create the correct image.


Sometimes the technically “worst” camera may produce the best image for the story.


That concept is central to the experiment.

One of the project’s most important technical components is possible because we already own key parts of the required film-imaging infrastructure.


In addition to owning the Phantom Flex 4K, our available equipment includes an ARRI film scanner and an ARRILASER film recorder.


This gives us the opportunity to perform a genuine digital-to-film-to-digital experiment.

We can then compare the original digital camera file directly against the same image after it has physically traveled through a photochemical film intermediate.

This is fundamentally different from placing artificial grain over digital footage.


The image actually becomes film.

WE ALREADY OWN KEY TECHNOLOGY


An important advantage of the project is that much of the specialized technology is not theoretical.


We already own significant production and post-production equipment, including key systems required for the experiment.


Among the equipment available to the production are:

* ARRILASER film recording technology

* professional digital cinema camera systems and access to additional camera platforms;

* film-production equipment;

* professional post-production infrastructure;

* color-correction and finishing capabilities.


This dramatically changes the feasibility of the experiment.


A production attempting to rent specialty high-speed cameras, film scanners, film recorders and associated post-production technology for extensive experimentation could face substantial costs.


Our existing infrastructure allows us to devote far more time to testing, experimentation and creative development.

PURSUING TECHNICAL RECOGNITION


Our ambition extends beyond creating unusual cinematography.


We intend to develop and document the workflow rigorously enough to investigate submission for appropriate cinematography, filmmaking and technical-achievement recognition, including evaluating a potential pathway toward the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Scientific and Technical Awards if the resulting technology or process satisfies the Academy’s applicable criteria.


The objective would not simply be that the movie “uses many cameras.”


The potential achievement lies in developing a repeatable imaging methodology combining extreme high-speed acquisition, multiple digital sensor technologies, multiple photochemical formats, digital-to-film recording, precision film scanning, color science and narrative cinematography into a unified workflow.



THE CENTRAL IDEA


Most productions spend enormous effort making different cameras match.


Scarlet Circle deliberately asks the opposite question.


What happens when we allow cameras to be different?


What happens when:


ARRI does not have to look like RED?


RED does not have to look like Sony?


Sony does not have to look like Canon?


Canon does not have to look like Fuji?


Digital does not have to pretend it was film?


And what happens when digital imagery is actually recorded onto motion-picture film with an ARRILASER and scanned back using an ARRI scanner?


Those differences become part of the emotional architecture of the movie.

From Phantom Flex 4K extreme super slow motion, through ARRI, RED, Sony, Canon and Fuji digital cinematography, to genuine 35mm, 16mm and 8mm film, and finally through an ARRILASER → film → ARRI scanner hybrid workflow, Scarlet Circle will explore more than what cameras can record.


It will explore how imaging technology changes what an audience feels.


The finished production is intended to function simultaneously as:


A feature film.


A cinematography experiment.


A camera-comparison reference.


A film-versus-digital study.


A high-speed cinematography showcase.


A film-school teaching resource.


A demonstration of hybrid photochemical/digital workflows.


And potentially, with sufficient innovation, rigorous documentation and industry impact, a project capable of pursuing significant technical recognition.


We are not trying to make every camera look the same. We are using their differences to tell the story.


Camera choice becomes character.
